Тема: [ilrs-sta] New Space Debris Study Group / SDSG

Dear colleagues,

at the Governing Board meeting in Annapolis it was decided to establish a new

Space Debris Study Group (SDSG).

We are inviting now all interested colleagues, SLR stations etc. to participate in this study group.

If you are interested: Welcome - and let me know !
A dedicated mail exploder for this study group will be established at ILRS,
and if you would like to participate, your mail address will be added to this list.

Motivation for this SDSG

§ - Several SLR stations already have tracked successfully space debris:
§ Graz, Grasse, Stromlo, Shanghai, Changchun, Yunnan, several Russian stations, ???
(hope I did not forget anybody?)

- § More stations intend to join (possibly using their standard laser at IR wavelength?):
Wettzell, NASA, Riga, San Fernando, more Chinese stations, ???

§
- There is an increasing interest of s pace agencies in debris laser ranging: ESA, NASA, WPLTN …
These organizations need / would appreciate a proper interface to ILRS.

Tasks for this SDSG (examples)

- Coordination of Space Debris Laser Ranging Activities:
target selection, schedules, data quality control, data exchange / format issues etc.

- Suggestion / selection / definition of debris ranging experiments on an worldwide scale

- Calibration issues: e.g. 1-way calibration in case of multi-static debris ranging

- Hardware / software support and exchange (Event Timers, TLE handling, ....)

- To be continued / complemented ....

Please send me a short mail if you want to participate in this SDSG / Space Debris Study Group !

Georg
