Dear members of IAU Commission 8, "Astrometry" !

1. IAU Commissions

Yesterday a proposal was submitted to the IAU by Norbert Zacharias,
Anthony Brown, Dafydd Evans, and Sergei Klioner to create a
Commission "Astrometry" under Division A. This was the first
phase (letter of intent). The full proposal will be due before
end of January 2015. By October 15, 2014 all letters of intent
will have been submitted and made public. At that time all IAU
members will be asked which Commissions they like to join.
Between October and January there will be time to re-arrange
Commissions, based on the membership poll and further comments,

2. Gaia update

---

Gaia has completed engineering tests and entered survey operations,
see www.cosmos.esa.int/web/gaia/science-performance .


3. Deceased member

---

It is with sadness that we report the death of Commission 8 member
Hans-Heinrich Bernstein from Heidelberg.
