MAIN ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY NAS OF UKRAINE
The Main Astronomical Observatory (MAO) of the National Academy of
Sciences of Ukraine was founded on July 17, 1944 on the initiative of
the well-known astronomer and geophysicist O.Ya. Orlov (1880-1954),
Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The Observatory is
situated 12 km from the centre of Kyiv, in the Golosiiv forest (hence
its unofficial name - the Golosiiv Observatory). The geographical
coordinates of the Observatory are 2h02m E
and 50o21'.9 N, 186 m above sea level.
The Observatory was headed by O.Ya. Orlov, Member of the Academy of
Sciences (1944-1948, 1951-1952), V.P. Tsesevich, Associate Member of
the Academy of Sciences (1948-1951), A.O. Yakovkin, Associate Member of
the Academy of Sciences (1952-1959), E.P. Fedorov Member of the Academy
of Sciences (1959-1973), Dr. I.K. Koval' (1973-1975). Since 1975
the post of Director is held by Ya.S. Yatskiv, Member of the Academy
of Sciences.
